Our Mission
Our Mission
Courageous Community Services makes outdoor recreation accessible for everyone.
For more than 60 years, Courageous Community Services has created a place where individuals with disabilities can experience the joy, friendship, and adventure of summer camp.
Our story began in 1963 with a vision to ensure children and young adults with disabilities had the opportunity to attend summer camp. The first campers arrived in 1965, beginning a tradition that continues today at Courageous Acres.
Each summer, Courageous Acres welcomes campers of a wide range of ages and abilities for experiences designed with inclusion and accessibility at the center. From swimming and outdoor recreation to arts and crafts, music, nature activities, and time spent with friends, camp gives each person opportunities to participate, explore, build confidence, and simply have fun.
For many campers, Courageous Acres is much more than a place they visit for a week each summer. It is a place where friendships are built, independence is encouraged, new experiences are possible, and everyone has the opportunity to belong.
Mission Statement
Courageous Community Services’ mission is to provide meaningful, inclusive opportunities for individuals with disabilities and their families through advocacy, education, and engaging recreational experiences.
Our Impact
Since our first camp session in 1965, thousands of individuals with disabilities and their families throughout Northwest Ohio have been part of the Courageous Acres community.
Summer camp remains at the heart of Courageous Community Services. Our programs give campers opportunities to connect with nature, develop friendships, try new activities, build skills and independence, and experience the traditions that make summer camp special.
The impact of camp also extends to families. While their loved one is enjoying meaningful experiences in a safe and supportive environment, families and caregivers have an opportunity for valuable respite and time to recharge.
Building on our long history of creating meaningful opportunities for individuals with disabilities, Courageous Community Services also offers Courageous Connections, our year-round Adult Day Support program. Courageous Connections provides opportunities for participants to build life skills, engage with their community, develop relationships, and experience greater independence.
Whether at summer camp or through Courageous Connections, our purpose remains the same: creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities to experience friendship, independence, connection, and belonging.
